LACK OF EDUCATION MAKES PEOPLE MORE SUSCEPTIBLE TO HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSES
Today, Human Rights Violations occur in every part of the world.
The violation of Human Rights has been an ongoing problem through out human history. Today, the problem continues to be present in society and an ongoing complex issue. In fact, the concept of Human Rights is still more of a dream than a reality as violations exist in every part of the world including affluent locations.
There are currently 250 million children who are not learning basic literacy skills and about 774 million adults (15 yrs and older) cannot read or write (75% being women). Nearly half of the world’s population, more than 3 billion people, live on less than $2.50 a day. More than 1.3 billion live in extreme poverty, less than $1.25 a day and 22,000 children die each day due to poverty. There are 40.3 million people in slavery today and 600,000 to 820,000 men, women and children are trafficked across international borders each year, half of which are minors.
Reform Through Eduction believes that education and awareness, the latter being a byproduct of education, are pivotal in preventing human rights violations from occurring and decreasing the amount of poverty, human trafficking, slavery, gender discrimination, and numerous other human rights violations from occurring as well as increasing literacy rates. Education is instrumental in breaking cycles of oppression and poverty. Educating poor, underprivileged children gives them opportunities in life to pursue trades, earn a market wage, not be subjected to child labor, enslaved, entered into the sex trade, and/or subjected to arranged marriages. All of these are very common occurrences for children, girls in particular, from impoverished families to which basic resources such as food and shelter are scarce and education is often not available.
Reform Through Education is making impactful changes in these issues and changing conditions one area at a time.
Without education more and more human rights abuses become prevalent.
